Children with higher speech-language functioning tended to express more sadness than did children with lower speech-language functioning. Finally, there was a negative relationship between the number of traumatic events that participants had experienced and their expressive domain receptive scores. Conclusions: Children with higher frequency of traumatic experiences were not more likely to be identified as having speech-language impairments. Rather, children who experienced more traumatic events tended to be at greater risk for being identified with a speech-language impairment. In addition, children who were at greater risk for speech-language impairments tended to express more sadness than children who were not at risk.
